Description:

Important Civil War Hero Grouping Belonging to Paymaster John H Stevenson. He was described as a Militant Navy Daredevil, raiding several Confederate signal stations, recruiting stations, and other noted meritorious missions. A WWII Destroyer was named after him. He was also asked to re-enlist during the Spanish American War for which he did. Included in this lot are his items that were in his direct familys possession' A Naval Officer 9 button Coatee/Tail Coat with "Devlin & Co New York" label. That label is listed as being used only from 1861-1864. Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword with leather scabbard. Blade is stamped at Ricasso "Shannon Miller & Crane NY" a post C.W. supplier. Horstman Paymaster Rank shoulder boards with tin box. Paymaster commission signed by Rutherford B. Hayes dated 1863. A Span Am Officer coat with paymaster collar rank, and a small printed booklet that he signed about his daring missions during the C.W. One set of Civil War era Paymaster shoulder straps with leather backing. One set of post Civil War era (1890s) 5th year Paymaster shoulder straps, made in London. Condition: All items were worn and used, which would be consistent with his military history. Sword blade etching remains but is weak from use and polishing, Quillion is bent down 1/2" and has a hair crack at bend. Hilt grip is complete with old polish in skin and cracks. Scabbard is intact with stitch loss at seam and dents to Throat, Hanger, and Drag. Coatee displays very well, but liner is degraded with rips, loss of material, and holes. Shoulder board mounts are missing on right side of Coatee. One London made button is missing and four others are present but not attached. Framed Commission is 17-38" x 21-1/8" overall with foxing to bottom 3-1/2" high and has signature fade. Signed booklet has released from spine but is complete. Boards have "Horstman" paper label and tin has a Horstman plate. 1/4" Fringe is unraveling in spots and one board is missing the fringe stabilizer string. Board box lid has separated from base. Two other items from his estate are listed in this sale as separate lots.
