Description:

19th century Indian gold tiger claw mounted jewelry suite. Symmetrical double tiger claw brooch with elaborately engraved gold panel and mountings. Chained drop pendants. Matching earrings. Gold tests as at least 14K. Brooch with engraved dedication on reverse: "Mary E. Wills, from her Husband at Sea / July 22, 1874". In original Handford & Crew Goldsmiths Calcutta felt lined leather jewelry case. Brooch: 2 3/8in wide. Overall weight of pin and earrings: 34.5 grams. One earring missing one drop prism, another prism replaced. This jewelry pairs with the preceding lot, a portrait of George Edward Wills.

Mary Wills was married to George Edward Wills of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Wills' family was heavily involved in the East India trade, with his brother operating in Calcutta and his father, Rufus, operating in Boston. It is likely that this was purchased during one of his trips for the family business.
