Edouard Detaille- "Le Mot de Passe". A French military scene depicting a soldier stopping approaching soldiers on horseback. 1877. Signed and dated lower right. Oil on canvas. Framed. Sight size: 15-1/4" x 18". Overall size- 22-1/2" x 25-1/2". Early exhibition label on reverse. Consigned by the Grandson of George Alfred Chapman who was born on May 25, 1871 in Akron, Ohio. He was principal of the American cereal Co. and when taken over by Quaker Oats Company in 1896, he became a vice president. He lived in Oak Park, IL where he covered the walls of his home with European and American art.
