Description:

Important Alaska photo archive of Colonel Frederick Mears. Early 1920s. Large snapshot photo album documenting Mears and his family's trip to his post at Chiltook Barracks in Alaska, along with daily life at the fort, winter and summer excursions, etc. Mears served as the Chief Engineer and later Chairman of the Alaska Engineering Commission which completed the Alaskan railroad system over a period of years culminating in 1923, which many of the photos in this journal are dated to and around. Highlights of the album include hunting trips showing bears (alive and pelts), numerous dog sledding images, Inuit figures and Native American sights such as totem poles, railroad tracks, bridges, construction and sights, glacier and mountainous landscapes, ships, soldiers, town landscapes, and more. Many of the views are identified with ink inscriptions, including a panoramic of the Fort with identified buildings. Accompanying the journal is a case of 50 glass plate photographs comprising many of the images included within the journal, and possibly some other unique images. Rounding out the lot are several pieces of ephemera, including the Congressional Special Report on The Alaska Railroad by the Alaska Engineering Commission (both an original and copied version), booklet on "Totem Lore of the Alaska Indians", Berthelsen and Pruell pamphlet for Alaskan curios and jewelry, an 8 x 10 photograph titled "Mirage of Mt. McKinley", and a leatherbound edition of "Poems of Klondyke's Early Days and Alaska's Long White Trail". Album measures 10.5 x 13.5in.
