Description:

Scarce American Revolutionary War Period John Ames Made Musketoon Flintlock. These war time muskets are seldom observed and this one being made by John Ames of West Bridgewater Massachusetts, a gunsmithand and Major during the Rev War may be his only example known. Retaining a .71 Cal 30-5/8" english ballister barrel without any stampings a 2-1/4" tang, a rear later applied sight, and a top mounted bayonet lug 1-5/8 from muzzle. English type lock plate is period engraved "J.AMES" measuring 6-1/4" x 1-1/8" single sear screw with double line edge incision retaining French type Hammer, Screw "25", Frizzen, and Frizzon Spring all likely replaced during the late 18th century. Reverse of lock plate inscribed "79" which may be year made NOTE: this lock and barrel are NOT a reconversion. Trigger guard is brass 9" long by 3/4" wide english type copy, nailed to stock. Butt plate is a salvaged mid 18th century english brass fowler type measuring 4" x 1-1/4" with a 2-1/2" tang and is nailed to stock. No side plate, both retaining screws have crude teardrop brass ferrels similar to Worcester county fowlers. A cast brass english style entry thimble 4" x 9/16" and a sheet brass flared forward thimble 1-3/16 x 1/2". The nose cone is sheet brass 1" x 1/2" and is formed over stock barrel channels. Ramrod appears original with a broken worm. Stock appears to be Cherry and has an 8" flat top comb, 6-1/2" flutes, round wrist, entry thimble swell, 5/16 ramrod channel, 1/2" long curled trigger without a plate, and is 1-3/4" wide at bottom flat. This gun was born with all its existing furniture excepting maybe the nose cone due to relocation after a period gunsmith barrel repair. Overall length is 46-1/2" Condition: Stock and iron were steel wooled at one time and lock plate and breech have heavy pitting. Barrel at underside muzzle has an ingenious 2-1/2" x 7/16" period brazed scarf repair to a prior burst split in barrel that likely happened before this gun was assembled. This repair would not have affected the operation of the Musketoon being at the muzzle. An outstanding example of a colonial era firearm.
