Description:

Unusual large Pennsylvania sampler with black satin background. Dated 1837. Depicting alphabet, floral border, verse, Federal style house with fence and potted flowers and birds. Done by Agnes Greenbank, aged 8, 1837. Agnes Greenbank of Pennsylvania, born to Reverend Richard Mason Greenbank in 1828. Reframed in later frame under glass. Old letter attached to back: "This Sampler was made by mother Agnes Greenbank Gaston. The Glass and frame being broken, it was folded away almost 100 years. Before removing the weak and broken canvas upon which it was made, I crossed stitched the designs upon the black satin backing. This was done by me in the summers of 1928 and 29. Signed Lillian Gaston." Other history denotes the sampler was purchased in Alexandria antique shop, etc. Overall: 23.5 x 27.5in.
