Union Navy Blockade letter, 1861. Rear Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont important signed letter written aboard the USS Wabash while stationed in Hampton Roads area in 1861, congratulating a reverend in Philadelphia on election to Bishop and reflecting on religious themes related to the sea and naval service. Written mere days before departing for the Wabash's assault on Port Royal, South Carolina, he notes the size of their "armada of some ninety ships" and reflects how it resembles "a large city floating on the waters." Signed and dated October 27th 1861. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Letter split at fold and loosely taped.
